I’ve been craving something rich and sweet lately and want to avoid the “bad stuff” as much as possible, so I’ve been using our NutriBullet to satisfy my husband and I’s occasional sweet tooth.

Ever since my cancer treatment center published articles on the amazing benefits of blueberries and how they have been shown to actually combat certain types of cancer cells, I’ve been consuming them on a daily basis in one form or another. We all know that blueberries are high in antioxidants and have many benefits when consumed on a regular basis. In addition to helping us avoid and fight disease, they have been shown to help digestion and prevent premature aging. They are also low on the glycemic index.

We discovered that by combining our daily allowance of blueberries with some other tasty and good for you ingredients, we got our cravings under control. The added benefit is that this drink is filling, keeping me satisfied well until next meal time!

I like to use bananas on the greener side to reduce the natural sugars in my Blast and to add that extra bit of protein. Chia seeds are high in omega 3’s and also contain fiber. The dark chocolate adds a boost of antioxidants and taste.

We have posted several recipes using blueberries, but I wanted to share one that really is just for dessert. Every once in a while, it’s fun to treat yourself and your family to a sweet NutriBlast, and this one happens to be one of my favorites.

Blueberry, Banana & Chocolate Blast
Ingredients
  • ½ cup of frozen or regular organic blueberries
  • 1 small banana, mostly green
  • 1 teaspoon chia seed
  • A good chunk of at least 70 percent dark chocolate
  • 1 scoop of your favorite protein powder
  • Optional: Unsweetened shredded coconut
  • 2 ice cubes
  • 1 cup almond milk
Directions
  1. Add all ingredients to your NutriBullet cup and extract until smooth.

We top ours with non-dairy whipped cream, adding to the delicious and all natural sweetness of this drink.

Not everyone enjoys a pure green drink; many NutriBullet users prefer a healthy, more colorful combination of fruit and vegetables. It was not too long ago when my diet consisted of every color but green as I basically ate nothing but salty, sugary and processed foods. So it is really almost a miracle that my NutriBlasts are now 99.9 percent green!

It comes down to preference. My spouse does not appreciate how my extreme green drinks taste, so sharing is not an option. His NutriBlasts usually include all greens and about ¼ fruit.

I do love fruit and eat at least the daily requirement, but as I progressed through my NutriBullet transformation, I began using less fruit and more vegetables in my drink and slowly, my taste for sweets subsided. It all comes down to your needs and goals. It is not easy for someone who isn’t accustomed to eating vegetables to just start drinking a crazy bright green smoothie. Many of my friends and family who are now loyal NutriBullet users cannot go extreme green and that is understandable. It’s just not for everyone. I am just happy that they are using the NutriBullet to help them meet their daily requirements for fruit and vegetables.

The taste of a pure green drink does take time getting used to, but the benefits are amazing. Also adding a bit of juice from a lemon really takes the sting out of kale and is also great for detoxing. If you are ready to go extreme green or at least give it a try, here is one of my favorite, quick and simple recipes that use the organic blend from the store. This literally takes under 5 minutes to make!

Extreme Green
Ingredients
  • 1 large handful of organic greens blend – (kale, chard and spinach)
  • 1 chunk of cucumber
  • ½ small celery stalk
  • Some fresh cilantro or basil
  • 1 squeeze of lemon
  • 1 teaspoon goji berries (okay, not green, but a great boost!)
  • Small handful of raw almonds
  • Water to max line
Directions
  1. Add all ingredients to your Tall Cup and extract for 30 seconds, or until smooth.

If you do want to sweeten it up a little, you cann use unsweetened coconut water instead of spring water to the MAX line.

This drink is detoxifying and energizing! Enjoy!

Jelly Donut Blast

In the words of one of my favorite TV characters, Homer Simpson, “Donuts. Is there anything they can’t do?” Wouldn’t life be great if you could eat jelly donuts everyday and not get the bad-for-you fat and calories? Not to mention the powdered sugar all over your face, fingers and clothes! Sigh! Alas, wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could stuff a donut into your NutriBullet and make a healthy, tasty Blast? Well, I finally found a way of having my donut and drinking it, too – a Jelly Donut Blast!

Wait! It’s not what you think! The taste is amazing – just like the real thing – but made of healthy, fresh whole foods. A friend of mine who knows about my sweet tooth and happens to love donuts gave me the idea for this tasty concoction. I took the flavors of a  a perfect jelly donut and transformed them into this creamy, healthy drink. So, grab a straw and ditch the donuts! No excuses!

Blueberry smoothies

Jelly Donut Blast
Ingredients
  • 1½ cups blueberries, fresh or frozen
  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted peanuts
  • ½ cup cold brewed coffee
  • 1-2 drops stevia
  • 3 – 4 ice cubes
Directions
  1. Add all ingredients to NutriBullet Tall Cup and extract until smooth.

 

I kid you not, this Blast tastes just like a jelly donut, but you can rest easy knowing it’s good for you. The blueberries provide vitamins and antioxidants, peanuts give you an extra protein punch, plain, unsweetened Greek yogurt provides probiotics that are excellent for gut health, and coffee adds that kick of flavor and energy-boosting caffeine. Add raspberries for a twist!
