A quarter of our calories were allowed to be ‘empty calories,’ i.e. junk food, but most Americans (95%) exceeded this maximum. Three-quarters of Americans couldn’t eat one whole fruit serving a day and 9 out of 10 couldn’t meet the daily vegetable serving recommendation. It’s difficult to wonder why America’s diet is in crisis when we can’t meet even such lax health food guidelines.
